When Emmy Rossum purchased her pre-war apartment in Midtown Manhattan, she knew it would need a lot of work. The actress enlisted ELLE DECOR and designer Antonino Buzzetta to transform her 800-square-foot “pied-à-teardown” into the home of her dreams.
The style Rossum sought to achieve was “chic, European, the look of a modern girl who has inherited her grandmother’s stuff. I wanted it to have a young energy, but with old-fashioned touches,” she told Buzzetta. The living room features an antique fireplace Rossum found while shopping with her mother at the Marché aux Puces in Paris.
The herringbone wood floors were among the only original elements to remain after the extensive renovation. In the new build, Buzzetta added architectural features and refreshed the built-in bookshelves to channel the history of the 1928 building.
Irving Penn photographs and an antique chandelier (see similar style below) Rossum inherited from her grandmother grace the elegant dining area.
Buzzetta created extra surface space in the compact kitchen by tearing down a wall and building a breakfast bar in its place. To brighten the ebonized cabinetry, he selected Caesarstone quartz countertops and pair of globe pendants inspired by vintage subway lights.
When choosing finishes, “Mixing metals is a much more relaxed approach,” Buzzetta said. He selected brass task lights and a timeless crystal chandelier with polished nickel accents in the bedroom. The soothing wall color is Farrow & Ball’s Parma Gray.
Linear bath sconces were a sleek solution in the bathroom where wall space was limited. The sink, walls and mosaic floor are outfitted in Ann Sacks marble.

Step inside the breathtaking Coastal Living 2016 Showhouse in Bridgehampton, New York. The 6,800-square-foot retreat designed by architect Fred Throo with interiors by Meg Braff is a modern take on the traditional Hamptons-style home. Shop the lighting looks showcased in some of our favorite spaces and see the full house in the September issue of Coastal Living!
Harmonious pops of blue and green can be found throughout the house. The combination makes a splash in the living room, which overlooks the pool area through french doors.
The showhouse features 10 bright prints from Braff’s own wallpaper and fabric lines. She selected a white mirror and light fixtures to accent her tropical fan pattern on the powder room walls.
In the dining room, Braff opted for white surfaces and chair legs in place of natural wood tones for a brighter, more casual feel.
Builders Anthony Balducci and Dave Bennett added character to the 18-foot cathedral ceiling of the master bedroom with white beams and shiplap paneling.
The master suite is the only room to prominently feature the color yellow, which makes the room and its elements feel all the more special.
The home was built to be the ultimate retreat for playing host to summer visitors. Guest accommodations include three colorful bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.
Braff repeated the embroidered shell motif seen on the bedding in the first guest room on the towels in the adjoining bathroom.
Rattan pieces in the second bedroom add an touch of vintage flair to the predominantly modern decor.
Braff incorporated the coral hue in the second guest bathroom with scalloped tile and a subtle wallpaper pattern.
A solid shade of kiwi green on the walls of the third guest room balance the plethora of prints in surrounding rooms. Fresh flowers and a sculptural table lamp at the bedside add organic charm.
Polished nickel fixtures and crisp, white cabinets make for a clean look at the vanity of the third guest bathroom.
A game table, desk and trundle beds doubling as sofas are clever accommodations for guests in the bonus room over the garage.
A spacious laundry room on the second floor is as beautiful as it is functional.
The pool house lounge and changing room echo the playful use of color and pattern found in the main house.

A classic brass lantern and shiplap walls set a tone of casual elegance in the entry.
Highlights of the kitchen include a beamed ceiling, warm brass fixtures and custom range hood. The tabletop adjacent to the island is a perfect place to gather with guests.
To celebrate the completion of the home, we partnered with Novella Homes and Charleston Home + Design on a spectacular kick-off event. Coastal Crust mobile eatery provided Neapolitan style pizza, locally-crafted beer on tap and an eclectic assortment of wines. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!
