This symmetrical, elegant, and simply brilliant design has been around for centuries and we can’t get enough of how it’s being used in today’s modern interior design world!

Architecture

The quatrefoil is a classic shape used in architecture throughout the Gothic and Renaissance eras.  Its ornamental form, resembling a four-petal flower, has certainly withstood the test of time, being used more frequently in modern interior décor.

The chair back on this Alexandra Chair by Suzanne Kalser is a beautiful application of the quatrefoil in design.  This elegant motif can also be found in rugs, fabrics, wallpaper, light fixtures, and furniture.  The classic, yet modern, shape has been updated to fit many design schemes. Whether used to make a bold statement, or as subtle addition to your design — we love how the quatrefoil can be used to transform any room!

The Goodman Hanging Lamp by Thomas O’Brien is one of our most popular lights by far. It is available in a variety of finishes and sizes so there is one for every style interior.

Occasionally we come across someone who has gone a step further in designing their space and added a bespoke air to it. Athena Calderone custom painted two Goodman Lamps a dramatic gray to coordinate with the monochromatic kitchen in her Brooklyn penthouse recently featured in Harper’s Bazaar.

The brass interior of the shade provides amazing contrast against the bold color in the room for a modern, elegant feel.

Gray Goodmans

Miles Redd – in his signature glamorous style – chose a bright green to customize the Goodman Lamps in this dinning room and the result is breathtaking.

We are well into the holiday season and we can’t get enough of the festive decorations!  Here are just a few inspiring ideas to get your home feeling simply brilliant and full of cheer for the holidays!

Keep your decor simple by adding touches of seasonal color, and mixing year-round decor with holiday accessories.

The Bead and Tassel Chandelier looks great in this living room with pops of red and icy blue that stand out against the snow-like background created by the white furniture.

Cool and warm tones set the mood for any holiday.

The Aspen Iron Wall Lamp provides an ambient light in the entryway to this cozy cottage.  The wreath, made of twigs and winter greenery, coordinates perfectly with the cabin’s earthy aesthetic for the right touch of Christmas cheer.

One of the easiest ways to achieve the holiday glow is with metallics that create sparkle well into the New Year!

The gold and silver accents adorning this mantel work perfectly with the Bryant Sconces in Hand-rubbed Antique Brass. The touches of evergreen and citrus add texture and interest to the room.

Lighting can make all of the difference when it comes to adding the right amount of drama to your room.

For a subtle, yet clever, change for the holidays, swap out your classic candelabra bulbs for modern globe bulbs.  They mimic the ball ornaments used to create a winter wonderland effect as seen with the Large George II Chandelier in the room above.

Have you completed your holiday decorating or are you still adding the finishing touches? What are some of your favorite items to use?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

White kitchens have surged and resurged since the dawn of kitchen design. Kitchens became the “heart of the home” in the 1920’s and have only continued to grow as the most used room in the home. Over the years, white kitchens have gained and seemingly lost popularity only to regain it a few years later. I believe they have established themselves on the list of lifelong trends. If done right, a white kitchen is classic and timeless.

In the past, most homeowners had distinct opinions of the white kitchen; they either loved it or hated it. Lately we have seen clients who previously despised the idea of a white kitchen highly considering and typically choose them as their finish!  The change of heart seems to root from the abundance of selection choices available today. Cabinet lines have added multiple shades of white from stark white to a creamy, country linen white. There are also the optional glazes, rustic rub throughs, high gloss finishes, and multiple distressing options (rock nicks, crackling, cow tailing, joint cracks, bird pecks, etc.). These different selection opportunities allow homeowners to create a white kitchen that suits their personal lifestyle.

Boston Functional Single Pendants in Bronze are featured over the sink.

A white kitchen used to be viewed as “cold and sterile” while now it is seen as “warm and welcoming.” The creamier finishes, espresso glazing, and distressing really soften up the look. The concept of two-toned kitchens can also create a warmer space. Many homeowners choose different finishes and/or different materials to update the “old” white kitchen feel. There are endless opportunities to create this look; choosing a stained finish on the island, on a focal point like the hood or sink cabinets, or using a different material/color counter top in different sections of the kitchen (see photo for an example where a homeowner used a white granite counter top on the perimeter and a grey slate on the island). This is perfect for the indecisive homeowner. If you love multiple finishes and materials you can use them all!  The trick is to make sure your designer/architect/contractor creates a cohesive look with the different finishes and materials.

For those of you who still doubt the white kitchen trend is here to stay, consider all the new door styles. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different door styles to choose from today. You can get the exact look you are going for through selecting the right door style whether contemporary, transitional, or traditional. There are slab, shaker, raised panel, recessed panel, light beaded, heavy beaded, square edged and profiled edged doors. There are a variety of styles within each category, leaving endless options for your space. Choosing the right door style is a perfect way to compliment a white finish.

Caged Lantern in Polished Nickel with Natural Paper Shade is featured over the island.

White kitchens have come a long way since the 1920’s. They have come and gone as trends, however, it appears they are here to stay! With the right white, glaze or distressing, the possible use of another finish, and the right door style; a white kitchen may sneak its way into your future. Work with your designer/architect/contractor to create a timeless and unified design with white… after all, white is the new white!

The Goodman Hanging Light with Natural Paper Shade
Traditional Home Magazine recently polled several of today’s hottest designers and asked them to share their No 1 decorating tips  ….  here’s a great suggestion to consider when selecting the right ceiling fixture from one of our favorite designers, Alexa Hampton.

Do the math
“Chandeliers are famously tricky for people to figure out because they’re hanging in the middle of the room with no points of reference against which to gauge for size. A great rule of thumb that I learned years ago is to take the width of the room in feet, double the number, convert it to inches, and that is the minimum dimension for your chandelier’s diameter. I say minimum because it can always be fun to oversize a chandelier, but one should never have it look dinky. Finally, for utility’s sake, make certain that a chandelier never hangs too low over a dining room table. Always keep in mind that you want to look at your dinner companions, whether they’re family or guests.”

Paloma at La Dolce Vita has a great post this week on how to create the fabulous styles found in designer decorated, million dollar homes when you’re lacking a million dollar checkbook. Designing and decorating a home can suddenly seem overwhelming when you find that in pricing the perfect, plush fabric you desire for your drapes and the streamlined console table for your foyer it’s going to set you back more than a few car payments. Plucked from their pages, the elements used by top designers to create the perfect home sanctuary can be out of reach for many of us; but that doesn’t inhibit our love of them or the hope that we might be able to fill our own homes with similar design elements. As Paloma explains, with a little “resourcefulness and ingenuity” it’s possible to recreate the ideas we swoon over and lust after on the crisp pages of our favorite design magazines. Sometimes, you just have to know where to look.

In her post, Paloma includes some great photos showcasing the interior of a home in Houston’s Piney Point Village which has been outfitted with several gorgeous Circa Lighting pieces. When trying to recreate the beauty of professional design in your own space Paloma feels that “lighting truly is the jewelry of the home and isn’t something we usually skimp on.” She suggests deciding “which items are truly important to you… which ones you live with for the longest amount of time” and “invest[ing] the most in them.” Well we couldn’t agree more; lighting can absolutely transform the entire feel of a space with the simple act of twisting a dimmer switch. The right chandelier or lantern can change the experience of getting off of work into an extraordinary homecoming, a warm welcome with the right lighting. We also believe that our products should be attainable and accessible; you should not only spot our fixtures in your favorite magazines showcased by top designers, you should also be able to buy them. Paloma is right: you shouldn’t skimp on the items that last a lifetime. And with Circa’s commitment to affordable price points and the superior, hand-crafted quality of our lighting fixtures, selecting your favorite is guaranteed to be the most fun you’ve ever had not skimping.
